1-              Introduction to the car and initial driving techniques

·           Circle check, Pre-Driving Habits: stands in front of the car

·           Look for fractures, filth, freedom to move, flats, and fluids [looking for leaks]

·           Check the front, drivers, rear, and passengers side

·           Look for anyone hiding inside

·           Get into the car and check for flying objects

·           Consider locking the doors

·           Place left foot on rest for balance

·           Place right foot under break pedal

·           Adjust seat so that pedal can be fully depressed

·           Adjust seat so that arms are extended over the top of steering wheel

·           With the right hand reach for the seat belt and pull the buckle

·           Buckle the seat belt, flat, low and across the breastbone

·           Adjust the mirrors, middle to middle, top to top, edge to edge

·           Identify all the signals and accessories

·           Accessories off

·           Check emergency break [should be pulled on]

·           Shift lever in P position

·           Key to warning light position and check all the instruments lights are on

·           Right foot over the break (won’t flood engine)

·           Start the engine

·           Adjust accessories: lights, heater or air conditioning, wiper blade if rainy,

·           Place foot firmly on the brake

·           Put gear in D Position

·           Gently release brake [check that emergency brake is holding]

·           Place foot firmly on the brake

·           Release the emergency hand brake

·           Gently release brake to move forward

  

2-              Shut Down Procedure

·           Emergency hand brake on

·           Gently release brake [check that emergency brake is holding]

·           Place the gear lever in P position

·           Accessories off: lights, air, heaters, wiper blades

·           Turn engine off

·           Release seat belt

·           Move the seat back

·           Lock the door with the key

  

3-              Long Range Planning

·           Introduction to visual tracking; how our eyes work

·           Long range viewing; frontal space needs; identifying and itemizing conflicts directly ahead on our lane

·           Dealing with traffic patterns and problems that affect the flow of our vehicle

·           Stopping first in a line of traffic when there is no car behind

·           Stopping first in a line of traffic when there is a car behind

·           Stopping behind another car when there is no car behind

·           Stopping behind another car when there is a car behind

·           Proper use of the inside mirror when stopping

·           Use of the foot brake for communication (or miscommunication)

·           Identifying learning problems and finding the right solution 

  

4-              Residential Driving

·           Visibility; legal stops, blind corners; right of way

·           Communication and miscommunication: eye contact, parked cars

·           Space on the road ahead: going around parked cars, oncoming cars when there is restricted space (parked cars, snow, etc.)

·           Residential turns: vehicle position; where are the eyes, feathering the gas or no gas at all; shoulder checks

·           Dealing with parked cars: identification process, what challenge our space in front; what to look for during a ground check; how to properly conduct a parked car scan; how to deal with a threat from the parked car

 

5-              Driving through large intersection

·           Approaching properly

·           Scanning the intersection

·           Choosing the GO POINT

·           Dealing with turning vehicles by getting eye contact. If still uncertain check the front tire of the turning car and check Rear View Mirror (RVM)

 

6-              Lane changes

·           Proper use of the inside and outside mirrors – what does it show and how do you interpret what you see; under which circumstances is each one used – independent of each other and together

·           When we are looking before attempting to start the lane change procedures

·           Where to “aim the car”; how smooth do we move over; and why smoothness is critical

·           How traffic and weather can complicate the L/C; problems associated with L/C

  

7-              Complex Turns- Left & Right

·           How soon to begin the turn sequence

·           Approach speed

·           Where to search the intersection for conflicts

·           Rational for the “S” shift

·           What clues are you looking for in order to position for the “S” shift

·           Left turn on red rule (the exception?)
